There is No Other

41 prayerThe following is an excerpt from President George H. W. Bush on his inaugural address, January 20, 1989.

“My first act as president is a prayer. I ask you to bow your heads.

“Heavenly Father, we bow our heads and thank You for Your love. Accept our thanks for the peace that yields this day and the shared faith that makes its continuance likely.

“If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.” —Deuteronomy 30:16

Make us strong to do Your work, willing to heed and hear Your will, and write on our hearts these words: ‘Use power to help people.’

“For we are given power not to advance our own purposes, nor to make a great show in the world, nor a name. There is but one just use of power, and it is to serve people. Help us to remember it, Lord.

“The Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; may He not leave us or forsake us; so that He may incline our hearts to Him, to walk in all His ways that all peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no other.”

So many of the principles and promises we read in the Old Testament that God gave to Israel can be applied to any nation that will accept and receive them. God desires to bless His people, including entire nations that will follow Him.

Pray that our nation would “walk in all his ways” and “know that the Lord is God.”

JEHOVAH GOD, lead me in Your ways. Help me to know You. Help me to know—and show—that You are God.
